Extended family tree template

Most family tree templates only go straight up and down — you, your parents, their parents. An extended family tree goes sideways as well, and that is where families actually live. Aunts, uncles and cousins are the people you saw every Christmas, and they are missing from a direct-line chart entirely.

This template shows a single set of grandparents and then follows both of their children outward: one becomes your parent, the other becomes your aunt, and their children are your cousins. It is the smallest tree that demonstrates how cousins arise — which is the relationship people find hardest to draw by hand.

Extended family tree template
10 people

Ten people across three generations: grandparents, two of their children with their spouses, and four grandchildren — two siblings and two cousins.

Use this template

Who it's for

  • Large families where the cousins are the whole point.
  • Anyone who has tried to explain second cousins at a family gathering and lost the argument.
  • Family reunions — one chart that everybody attending can find themselves on.

How to fill it in

  1. Start with the grandparents at the top. In an extended family, they are the common ancestor everyone else connects through.

  2. Fill in their children — your parent and your aunt or uncle — and then add the spouses who married in.

  3. Add each couple's children underneath them. Anyone descending from a sibling of your parent is your cousin; the chart will show this automatically.

  4. Add more siblings and more cousins. Real families are wider than any template, and this one is built to be widened.

  5. Use photos here especially. In a ten-person chart, faces are what let relatives find themselves at a glance.

Tips

  • The relationship labels are worked out for you — you never have to decide what “first cousin once removed” means, because the app computes it from the structure.

  • Share the finished tree by link. Extended families are exactly the case where other people will spot your mistakes and fill in your gaps.

Frequently asked questions

Cousins are not connected to you directly — they connect through your grandparents. You draw your parent and your parent's sibling as children of the same couple, and then the cousins hang beneath each of them. This template already has that structure in place.

One that includes relatives beyond the immediate household: grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and the spouses who married in — rather than only a direct line of ancestors.

A free account holds 12 people, which covers this template with room to spare. Pro raises that to 1,000 per tree, which is enough for essentially any extended family.
